Review : THE ABOMINABLE IRON SLOTH – "The Id Will Overcome"

The Abominable Iron Sloth – The Id Will Overcome
released April 27, 2010 on Blackmarket Activities

Rating: 3.5/5

From Seattle, The Abominable Iron Sloth is described as a band that draws comparisons to early Nirvana and Eyehategod among other influences. Such comparisons ring true as “I Destroy” is slow, plodding and full of hardcore intensity, bordering slightly on grunge. The instrumentation is very competent here. It would be safe to say that the songs that follow have a similar formula, starting with a short pause and the album is much like a buffet with each song leading up to the main course. “The Black Helicopters” changes up things a little with a sound that is very reminiscent of early Nirvana in which the hardcore intensity is nearly scrapped in favor of a cleaner, better-structured blueprint.  Certainly one of my favorite tracks on this album. “Big Iron Door” follows in a similar path by starting out quietly and then quickly ramping up, evoking more of that raw Seattle sound. My only gripe is that it’s a short song but still, it’s what I desire. “Heterodox Noncomformists” is 13 minutes long, starting out with a quiet, distorted whisper and it moves very slowly up until about the 5 minute mark when all you hear is distorted instrumentation and drumbeats. I’m not sure what to make of this track but I would say that it’s merely an exercise in distortion and it does not seem to conform with the rest of the tracks on this album. Overall, an interesting album that has some elements that interest me and I think you may like it as well.
