Review : MONSTER MAGNET – "Mastermind"

Monster Magnet– Mastermind
Release Date: 25Oct2010 (US)
Label: Napalm Records
Rating: 4.5/5

This is the 8th (or is it 9th or 10th?) release from Monster Magnet and the first since 2007’s “4-Way Diablo”. I didn’t think another MM album would come about so soon, with the release from Jim Baglino and Bob Pantella’s side band, Riotgod, released less than a year ago. Nevertheless, I’m stoked about Mastermind.

“Hallucination Bomb” starts things off with a classic dose of sludgy rock in which Wyndorf’s vocals seem muted. “Bored With Sorcery” is reminiscent of Hawkwind, with a strong dose of smokey guitars and excellent bass/drums laid together. I would pick this as one of my favorite tracks. Some of my other picks for best tracks include “Gods and Punks” (Wyndorf’s vocals dominate the beginning, shifting once again to a strong stoner rock vibe), “Mastermind” (has some wicked instrumental effects!), “Perish In Fire”, “Time Machine” (another vocal-heavy track that best utilizes Wyndorf’s vocals), “When The Plane Falls From The Sky” (arguably the strongest track on this album that sounds like the MM of old) and “All Outta Nothin”. Honestly, I’d spin every single track on this album.

It sounds as if Monster Magnet is trying to get back to their roots and they pulled it off well. If you like the Riotgod album and enjoy bands such as Kyuss and Knut, you’ll appreciate this.
