Review : UFO – "Best of a Decade"

UFO– The Best of a Decade
Release date: 28Sept2010 (US)
Label: Steamhammer SPV
Rating: 3/5

UFO is most famous for being a band that has bridged the gap between early hard rock and heavy metal, though never reaching the commercial success of bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. They hit their peak during the Michael Schenker era, but he is not part of the current lineup, which is Phill Mogg, Vinnie Moore (Vicious RumorsAlice Cooper), Pete Way, Andy Parker and Paul Raymond.  This album consists of songs from the past three UFO albums (You Are HereThe Monkey Puzzle and The Visitor) along with modern live versions of UFO classics.

“The Wild One” starts as a slowed-down rocker with a Southern flair, complimented by the vocals of Phil Mogg, which haven’t really changed much over the years. “Lights Out” is a live version of the classic and I must say that this version has a strong emphasis on Moore’s guitar and Parker’s drumming. It wouldn’t be fair for me to compare Vinnie Moore with Michael Schenker but I believe that Moore does an excellent job of emulating the former on this track. However, I cannot say the same for “Let It Roll” because it just lacks the heart and enthusiasm of the Schenker era.  “This Kids” is a bluesy version of the original track. “Heavenly Body” manages to cap off a rather boring first half with plenty of swagger from Mogg and Moore.

My main gripe is the way this album is structured. Mixing newer songs with modern live versions of older songs is a great way to confuse the listener and does nothing for the flow.  “Too Hot To Handle” is one of the better live tracks and “Black And Blue” is the best of the newer tracks on this album.  But overall, this album has more misses than hits and just fails to captivate me. You might enjoy this if you’re a hardcore UFO fan, but I recommend that you check out their complete work from the past decade, or just stick to the stuff from the Schenker era.
