Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction – We Are Volsung
Release date: 12Oct2010 (US)
Label : Steamhammer SPV
Rating: 3.5/5

Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction is a hard rock group from the UK that is the brainchild of graphic artist Mark Manning. They released their first EP in May of 1986 and have performed with the likes of Guns & Roses and Alice Cooper. Originally described as “biker rock”, their songs contain lyrics that can be seen as  humorous or misogynistic, depending on the listener. Regardless, We Are Volsung is their newest album since 2005’s Rock Savage.

“Stark von Oben” gets things moving with guitars that are very Black Sabbath-esque in nature. As you’re listening to this track, imagine a cross between The Darkness and Guns N’ Roses (Ed: with no high-pitched vocals). “We Are Volsung” expands on the epic GN’R feel, taking on a bit of Motorhead as well (mainly in their intensity and Manning’s Lemmy worship). A few other tracks that stand out to me are “We Ride”, “White Trash”, “Die Pretty” and “Kill Me A Mockingbird”. Most tracks do seem to run together but they always stick to a common sound/theme, which can be either good or bad, again depending on the audience.

Unlike Viking Skull, which is analogous to Mexican skunk, Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction is the equivalent of purple haze. It’s always good to see an old favorite crank out some new stuff, especially with the influx of joke/tribute bands out there. I also want to point out that Zodiac Mindwarp is a much better moniker than Mongoose McQueen (take that, Chris Jericho!).
