Over 30 years ago, the shores of America were invaded by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), which introduced acts such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Saxon. Fast-forward to 2011 and there is the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWOTHM), led by acts such as Holy Grail (US), Enforcer (Sweden) and Cauldron (Canada).
Cauldron hails from Toronto and this is their second full-length release after 2009’s Chained To The Nite. “All Or Nothing” is fast and brutal with a pedigree between Iron Maiden and Motorhead. It will raise your adrenaline level, causing you to alternate between head-banging and fist-pumping. “Miss You To Death” keeps the momentum going, but things really start to take off with “Frozen in Fire”, which contains a true display of power from Ian Chains (guitar) and Jason Decay (bass, vox). I was also pleasantly surprised by the incredibly catchy lyrics.
Other tracks that impressed me were “Tears Have Come” (lots of shouting!), “I Confess” (cover of a Halloween classic) and “Rapid City/Unchained Assault” (sounds like a tribute to British Steel-era Judas Priest).
This is an excellent release from Cauldron that uses the KISS method of heavy metal, and we’re not talking about face paint. There are no long, boring ballads and the lyrics are well-written. Cauldron has all the tools necessary to gain an audience, and will actually be on tour with Holy Grail this spring.
A Best of 2011 pick!
